Learning About The Efik/Ibibio Culture – Five Movies You Can Watch

The Efik/Ibibio culture is rich and alluring, and learning more about our history and heritage isn’t far fetched. Our website and Instagram and Facebook pages are buoyant with gorgeous pictures and videos that educate on some of our ethics, cultures and history. We portray mostly from the angle of weddings and cultural events but there are several other ways to learn about a culture. movies and documentaries, and TV shows are very powerful mediums to learn about any culture you are interested in. Here are some great movies for a start.

Ayamma

Ayamma, a cultural movie produced by Emem Isong, written by Vivian Chiju and directed by Chris Eneaji in 2016 explores the Ibibio culture and in an epic way. This is starring Adesua Etomi Wellington, Wale Ojo, Majid Michel, Theresa Edem, Moses Armstrong and Ime Bishop.

 

Obio Iban

A Movie by Eddie Brendan in 2012 is a good watch and expresses a lot about the Ibibio culture. It’s available on Youtube.

The Fattening Room 

The Fattening Room is a TV series airing on EbonyLife TV and it showcases the ancient Efik tradition of the rite of passage into womanhood.

I’ll Take My Chances

This is a dance romantic comedy produced by Emem Isong and directed by Desmond Elliot in 2011, co-produced by the talented Ini Edo and starring Bryan Okwara.

Uyai

A sensational comedy produced by Emem Isong in 2017, starring Actor and Comedian, Ime Bishop Umoh, Ini Edo, Lilian Ikpe, Moses Armstrong and Eve Esin. An extra to add to the list is Edikan jointly directed by Desmond Eliot in 2009.

Most of the movies about the Efik/ Ibibio culture were produced by our legendary Emem Isong, who has successfully brought to the world our beautiful culture through her productions.
